Review: Our Cartoon President “Mueller Probe”

The White House is just like the Apprentice, every week someone gets fired.

Overview:

Trump is getting worried that Robert Mueller is getting too close to finding his secrets. The president is worried that his cabinet is letting too many leaks out so he begins punishing them. But, he learns that he needs to start bugging them himself instead.

Meanwhile, Mike Pence has been awarded for his loyalty and earned an invite to Mar-A-Lago. Unfortunately, Karen Pence is worried that it might change him for good. Somehow, Trump convinces Pence to admit that it was, in fact, he that had slept with Stormy Daniels. But, Karen blows the whistle on the whole ordeal.

Our Take:

This whole episode had a Breakfast Club/summer camp movie theme that featured Trump monologuing his summer in the White House. As the story progresses it really gets into Trump’s insecurities, though he still is confident that he is going to get away with everything. Sometimes it is difficult to separate this show from fact and fiction. But, the end topped off the hilarity of this episode with a spoof of the old Breakfast Club theme, “Robert Mueller, don’t you indict me!”

Something about Mike and Karen Pence in this show gives me some serious creeps. Again, I don’t even know how much is fact vs fiction, but it really freaks me out. There is no way that these people are this blindly Catholic. Having them play a significant role in this episode kind of threw me for a loop. I don’t think it is far off that Trump could convince Pence to take the heat for him in one way or another. But, they just aren’t that funny, and you can only squeeze out so many jokes. It surprises me that on this Mueller focused episode they would focus on Pence instead of many other players that would make for a great episode.

It is also kind of shocking that this was the first episode that Mar-A-Lago played a larger role. You would think that there is a goldmine of jokes involved in Trump’s getaway and that the show would take part mostly there – I mean, that is where his presidency takes place. But, who knows, maybe we’ll see some more of it now.

Sometimes it can be tough to review this show. Episodes like last week are a complete mess that offers nothing. Other times, the show is 22-minutes of non-stop laughs. And then, there are episodes like this one. It shakes up the stagnant formula that is quickly getting boring, but is it doing the series any favours? I am not really sure. I want to say that I enjoyed it, but I can’t think of a single thing that stands out for me. It really was just okay, and I think there are lots of bigger better places they could take these stories. Relying on Trump’s current events is only going to take an animated show so far. They really need to start pushing the boundaries.
