Review: Our Cartoon President “Government Shutdown”

Trump acts out when he gets bored, and it ends up boring audiences.

Overview:

The American people are in protest as a government shutdown is inevitable.  The only thing holding the White House back is the meetings are super boring for Donald Trump.  With General Kelly heading out on vacation, there is no one to help keep Trump in line.  As Trump parties in Kelly’s absence the government is left without a budget and America falls into chaos.  But, as soon as Trump finds out that his cable is shut down, he solves the crisis immediately.

Our Take:

This show seriously needs to get better.  There are a lot of political references, and I worry it is too much.  I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable in today’s politics, and sometimes I struggle with the dry humour of Our Cartoon President.  The series has to be careful with its demographics.  We watch knowing that the show is politically based, but the sitcom should be more humorous than Trump’s everyday dealings.

There is a good example in this episode of what the show needs more of when Trump ends up in an upside-down Air Force One at the KFC drive-thru.  That is the kind of thing that an episode should start on and work out from there.  Unfortunately, it seems to be the pinnacle of jokes in the creator’s arsenal.

Besides the one example, it was a full episode of Trump acting like a baby- I can follow the real president on Twitter for that.  We also got the first musical number from Our Cartoon President, which was nothing to get excited about either.  There is a potential to make a really great cartoon here, and I am sad to say I think they are failing when I see episodes like this.
