Review: Our Cartoon President “First Family”

Is Donald and Milania’s marriage in worse shape than we thought?

Overview:

After Milania has been M.I.A. for a while, the media gets on Trump about a potential divorce. After he begins to lose the family vote, Milania and Donald decide to try and work things out before the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, Don Jr. and Eric are trying to be better behaved to make their dad look better. Things get pretty ridiculous when they go on TV dressed as little sailors. It is only a matter of time before they completely ruined everything.

Our Take:

This episode kicked off with a satire of Trump and Putin’s press briefing in Helsinki earlier this month. It is so accurate that it is borderline scary. Trump covering for Putin, Putin covering for Trump. When these world leaders are going to be so shady behind closed doors it is absolutely terrifying. Though, they did add some great jokes to keep this scene lighthearted.

For some strange reason, this episode has the same name as last weeks new episode, “First Family”. I am certain this was a mistake made before last week, as the title makes much more sense for this episode. But, it is very confusing and is going to convolute any searches for these episodes.

Another thing that I have noticed over the last two episodes is a lot of the storyline is starting to crossover. Mainly, this episode speaks a lot on Mueller being sent to Russia to investigate, which is the theme of the next episode. Sure, this is just major news that a show such as this needs to cover, but it does feel like they are beginning to set up future plots.

This episode is a lot of characters sitting around and things don’t progress very well. At one point Trump and Milania are meeting with people to discuss their issues, followed by Eric and Don Jr. doing the same thing. We get that these characterizations are one of the appeals of the show, but the jokes are pretty worn off now. It’s time to step up the game.

I did enjoy the conclusion of the show, and the reason the Trump’s decide to remain together. Essentially, they are the modern American family, unhappy and on the brink of divorce. It is curious how much this orange guy truly represents the America of today, and still, he couldn’t get the popular vote.

Tonight’s episode was a bit sloppy. It took half of the show to understand what the plot was going to be. Further, it is becoming more and more difficult to watch the same characters say the same jokes without anything ever actually happening. There wasn’t many good moments to save this show either, it was just a bland and boring episode. Hopefully, they start bringing back some of the larger overall jokes and do away with repeating themselves.
