Review: Marvel’s Spider-Man “The Cellar”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Spider-Man’s able to escape the alternate dimension that Regent put him in but isn’t able to save the Avengers who are all comatose in the same dimension. As a result, Spidey opts to go to max prison “The Cellar” to investigate the villains and learn how their powers are being used to take down Marvel’s finest. We learn that the prison’s warden, “Augustus” is behind bringing Regent to life and goes after Spider-Man with everything he’s got. After missing a shot, Spider-Man is able to get Regent to set Cloak free and help as does Doc Ock who frees Dagger.

Cloak and Dagger help rescue the Avengers to assist Spidey in taking down Regent for good mainly as a result of the Hulk just smashing the big dumb bot. Spider-Man makes up with Ms. Marvel who was mad at him and Augustus is sent back to “The Cellar”…this time as an inmate. And is Doc Ock getting ready to help Spider-Man…it looks that way?

Our Take

First thing’s first, Scott Menville is terribly miscast for Doc Ock who has been subjected to constant character assassination as a result of this franchise who has relegated a once-vaunted supervillain to that of a “geeky sidekick”. Second, Marvel TV is going to rue the day that they canceled their best live-action Marvel series, Cloak & Dagger and Aubrey Joseph/Olivia Holt reprising their roles from the one-time Freeform series to that of this series is proof. Yes, their dialogue gets heavily Disney-fied as a result, but they do a really great job with what they’ve been given…a script with never-ending robot enemies that appear to have no signs of stopping as we head to next week to face off with Goblin nation.

There are a lot of things wrong with Marvel’s Spider-Man, and the Cloak & Dagger cameos had me so close to rooting for this show, but there are just so many missteps that it’s hard not to just want to punch myself in the mouth every time a line is uttered in this poor excuse for a show.
