Review: Marvel’s Spider-Man “Superior”

(Possible Spoilers Below)

Superior Spider-Man (currently Doc Ock) must face his most challenging opponent yet when the Venom Symbiote has evolved to the point that it can function without a host and escapes from stasis and attacks Midtown High seeking revenge on Parker. But when the villain senses that Superior is not Parker, he threatens to hurt Anna Maria – a new companion Ock has grown close to – making Spider-Ock choose whether to give Peter his body back or lose his only friend.

Our Take

Predictably, while it’s the final part of this kid-friendly adaptation to Dan Slott’s “Superior Spider-Man” Saga, it was a decently written in terms of Otto’s development despite the shitty changes he made in Peter’s life (Though nowhere near as bad as the changes he made in the comic, and trust me they were much worse). It was also touching that even after the batshit insane stuff both Peter & Otto experienced, Anna Maria is able to comprehend the situation regardless of its absurdity.

Clearly Otto was a tad inexperienced in terms of combating Venom as the symbiote’s animalistic instincts are somehow capable of detecting another person behind the proverbial wheel, but Otto knew when to be incredibly selfless at the right moment, not to mention he finally acknowledges Peter as the more “Superior” one when even in his within the Robot Tentacles, he still jumped into action.

The fight-scenes were at least well-paced and suspenseful and gave a sense of urgency at both sides when needed, but, seeing Peter dive into danger even while his consciousness in a robot body was potentially knocking on death’s door was clearly the wake-up call Otto needed to make such a selfless choice and maybe whatever genuine feelings he had for Anna Maria.

Overall, for a 5-part mini-series, and despite the status-quo being somewhat restored, I look forward to seeing whatever direction Otto’s journey takes him, following all the lessons he learned from Peter’s memories and his time as Spider-Man. But it remains to be seen whether or not he’ll return at some point given Otto’s current state at the end of the episode, or if Otto and Anna Maria will even become a romantic Item.
