Review: Marvel’s Spider-Man “Cloak and Dagger”

When a new criminal duo, “Cloak and Dagger”, emerge at Midtown High with the plan to take revenge against Midtown’s benefactor Tiberius Stone and his company Alchemax, Superior Spider-Man (aka “Spider-Ock”) must take them down and protect the school. Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph (Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger) guest star as Cloak and Dagger, respectively.

Our Take

With the way the last episode ended, it’s clear Spider-Ock’s time is about to end as Miles is now able to speak to Peter who managed to transfer his consciousness into Doc-Ock’s robot tentacle arms.

What I did find clever and interesting were the scenes with Peter in a robot body as it’s a bit of a role-reversal with the robot’s voice being Scott Mellville (who voices Doc-Ock which is also conveyed in his inner-thoughts) while the voice of Peter Parker (Robbie Daymond) is voicing Doc Ock, it somewhat reminds me of an old John Travolta interview when he did the film “Face/Off” where he compared their hero/villain dynamic to kids taking turns and playing “Cops & Robbers”.

In retrospect, I was also shocked to see other substantial changes Ock has made with Peter’s life such as being reduced back to a public school however it also leads to the introduction of another supporting character from Dan Slott’s run of Superior Spider-Man in the form of Anna Marie Marconi whom in the comics was the love interest to Octavious during his time in Peter’s body and a unique character as she’s kind’ve the first dwarf in a Spider-Man comic who comes across as Otto’s intellectual equal but is balanced with also being a kind soul.

Upon research I had no idea who Tiberius stone was but it’s clear he’s a major player within the Spider-Man comics and much like Justin Hammer (Iron Man’s business rival) he comes across as an arrogant douchebag with a celebrity mentality believing the rules don’t exactly apply to him and his role in the plot kinda further ties with Cloak & Dagger in a way that makes sense near the end of the episode.
