Review: Magical Girl Friendship Squad: Origins “Superparty”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The girls kick off this week’s episode by cleaning up their room with their superpowers and decide to get SMASHED to celebrate despite Red Panda’s warnings to the contrary. A bounty hunter shows up and attempts to kill them, but despite being completely hungover with morning sickness are able to thwart eventual destruction. Have the girls learned a valuable lesson? Probably not…

Our Take

A few days after Magical Girl Friendship Squad gets picked up to series, and I stand by my original review noting that this is the best original animated series on Syfy. That said, I’m going to dig into something that I think needs to be spoken about now so we can get it out of the way…the dialogue. Overall, a well-scripted short for sure, however, if it were me, I’d hold back on just a few of the “fucks”. Reason being, and I’ve said this countless times before, crass language should be like salt and pepper on your steak. If you put too much salt on your steak, you’re going to end up ruining the taste. And while Magical Girl Friendship Squad isn’t quite ruining the taste just yet, I just want to heed caution to the producers that less is more in this case.

To that end, we get a hilarious premise that definitely feeds right into the “What if the Broad City girls got drunk then had to fight a bounty hunter” logline that was presented when the script for this bad boy was put together. Also of interest, we are starting to see influences of LGBQT characters in our starring roles (I’ll withhold who so as to not spoil) which I think is a sorely needed asset to an industry somewhat devoid of positive gay role models.
