Review: Jeff Dunham: Me The People

It’s been another banner year for Jeff Dunham. After being a part of FOX’s hit series The Masked Singer, the biggest ventriloquist in the world is back with another stand-up special and is continuing to tour the world with tour dates booked from now through May of 2023 and shows no signs of slowing down. Jeff’s latest special entitled “Me The People” is the second after “Jeff Dunham’s Completely Unrehearsed Last-Minute Pandemic Holiday Special” as part of a three special deal with Comedy Central, the network that largely boosted his career before turning into an international phenomenon that also saw numerous specials air on Netflix and a slew of guest appearances in TV, film, and other reality shows.

Jeff Dunham: Me The People sees Jeff stop off in Washington D.C., and as expected, opted to make this special hit right on the political nose. Does Jeff lean right or left? Arguably, he pitches right down the barrel of the plate, but at the start of the show he seems to support the right for stand-up comedians to say whatever they want with no fear of being canceled, or worse, assaulted on stage. The largely diverse, and sold-out, crowd seemed onboard with the notion as Jeff kicked things off with “Ben Hiden”, really just his infamous “Walter” character decked in Joe Biden gear and we were off to the races.

During the course of the new hour-long special Jeff moves at a brisk pace giving us bit sets featuring Bubba J, Peanut, Jose on a Stick, and his newest creation, URL, so as to comment on the mobile-infection that has taken hold of America for decades and has become increasingly more so. Noticeably absent, Achmed the Terrorist. Was the character cut for time? Or was Comedy Central nervous about having a Terrorist act on it’s network in front of the nation’s capital? Also noticeable, quick cuts that seemed to pair down Jeff’s acts quite a bit to somehow squish into the more strict run-time versus what the stand-up might have become accustomed to via Netflix.

In any event, Jeff puts up another solid hour of self-deprecating (for both himself and the viewers watching) humor featuring our fabled “little guys” and it’s a welcome sight to see. At the end, Jeff ushers up his twin boys and his wife for the final bow showcasing that, at the end of the day, Jeff’s very much a family man despite his bat-shit crazy schedule.
