Review: Happy “Destroyer of Worlds”

Smoothie is the happiest destroyer of worlds I’ve ever seen.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Its the penultimate episode of the season, and that means things are quickly reaching the boiling point. Following a colorful Christmas music video featuring everyone’s favorite psychopath, Smoothie, on the keyboard guitar, we begin the plot proper at Mr. Blue’s house, where the recently reunited Nick and Happy are cleaning up shop. They burst from Blue’s garage, guns a blazing, with Blue’s wife as a hostage/meat shield while Nick mows down goons while “Feliz Navidad” sets the mood for the occasion. Pretty soon, they’re the last ones standing, and with Blue’s wife’s help for directions to Isabella’s house, the two are off again to find Blue and hopefully find Hailey. Its the best Christmas ever for Blue’s son, until he accidentally presses the detonator for the bombs hidden in Nick’s old car, which explodes in the rear view as our heroes drive away.

Merry, following her mom’s sudden death, sets out to set things right, while the newly demonically possessed Mikey takes Isabella’s car with only one word on his lips, “Blue.” Amanda, too, has set out on her own, taking a more investigative route by speaking with “Sunny Shines”, who you might remember as the children’s singer from the concert Hailey was abducted at. She asks for his help, but Sunny isn’t interested, and Amanda leaves, disgusted, after Sunny tries to hit on her. But as she leaves the room, Sunny messages his guards to not let her leave the building. In a shocking twist, we see Sunny enter a secret room and put on the weird bug costume of the mysterious “My. Bug” that threatened Blue a few episodes ago. Sunny is the mastermind of this whole thing, it seems, and he wastes no time engaging with some kind of kinky costume nightmare party with his cohorts downstairs. Amanda unwittingly walks in on them and gets swallowed by the crowd of masked party-goers, screaming as she gets lost in the throng of latex and leather.

Meanwhile, Mr. Blue has had it with Isabella’s nonsense and arrives at her house to find Mikey. When she stands up to him, using the reality TV show she stars in as a defense, Mr. Blue starts executing the camera crew. Cut to Happy and Nick driving to their next destination. Happy is distraught after killing the imaginary friend from the last episode, but their conversation is cut short by Merry, who runs them off the road, with the intention to help them, of course. She gets a call from Amanda saying the culprit is Sunny, and they head out to find the big man and take him down.

They get to “Sunny Tower,” and the three split up to cover more ground. Merry stumbles into a costumed Teletubby-looking goon and takes him down with a knife to the junk. Nick is on the trail of the missing kids, but he’s ambushed from behind by Smoothie, who chloroforms him and holds him prisoner. Happy sees this and tries to get Merry to help Nick out, but she can’t hear his desperate pleas and Nick is left to Smoothie’s mercy.

Smoothie’s mercy is no mercy at all, really. He strips Nick down, ties him up bent over to a slab and sets up a camera to film the grizzly affair that’s about to take place. He decides to reveal to Nick why he’s named Smoothie and removes his trousers to reveal his action figure lower torso, completely devoid of any genitalia. Things are about to go really south for Nick, as Smoothie straps himself to do some terrible things to poor Nick Sax. But at the last moment, Merry comes in and pops a cap right in Smoothie’s eye, saving Nick from his fate.

Blue arrives to see the kids getting shipped off to Mr. Bug for his devious purposes, and isn’t exactly happy about it. He laments that he’s not the boss anymore, and is just an errand boy for psychopaths. But there’s not much time for his self-pity, because Nick, Happy and Merry start kicking some ass. Merry corners Blue in the shipping yard, who slips in the snow when his sweater gets caught on the fence. Nick and Happy rush to the truck to find Hailey, but find her missing from her captivity, with only a familiar sock puppet left at the scene. Creepy Santa has returned.

Our Take:

This episode was a firestorm from start to finish. Tight, action-packed and funny, this is some of the best Happy has to offer, and it made a fitting penultimate episode to bring things to a head before we finish. Looking forward to more quality material next week, and seeing the conclusion of the psycho pop extravaganza that is Happy!
