Review: Gary And His Demons “Gary And His Niece”

She’s swell!

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Gary’s niece Mikala is in town and if you recall from the show’s fourth episode she’s not exactly the most sociable teen and instead would prefer to bury her nose in her phone all day. Gary tries to liven things up by taking Mikala to the local mall that features a store run by a demon named Glade but the curious teen accidentally is pulled into another dimension so Gary and Glade have to go after her.

This time around, Mikala’s having a fun time in this odd world that Glade has built, but her curiosity nearly costs everything as Gary has to help everyone escape from booby traps, critters, and a giant mouse. Somehow, Mikala even becomes queen, but Gary’s able to save everyone and head back home.

Our Take

By far this week’s episode of Gary And His Demons was the most wildly imaginative of the season in that this week’s episode could’ve possibly been mistaken for a Rick and Morty one had you not read the title of the show. Similar to the Adult Swim series, Gary’s gotta undo whatever silly shit that a Summer or a Morty could have easily been put in place of Mikala, and being in an alternate dimension the producers do a good job of just going NUTS.

That said, I’m still noticing some technical flaws in Gary And His Demons. Skipped frames, drab colors, and uninspired character designs are holding this series back from being really, really good, but it’s still probably the best VRV/Mondo series you’re gonna see in 2018…so far. It’s well-written and the dialogue improves each and every episode. But, if this show had 25% more budget, can you imagine?
