Review: Gary And His Demons “Gary And His Birthday”

No cake?

Overview (Spoilers Below)

It’s his party, and he’ll cry if he wants to, but during his celebration at a local Irish restaurant, Gary comes across a kid named Tucker that he feels has the potential to be the next “chosen one” and as such will allow him to retire after 30 long years. Problem is, no one believes Gary’s case so he opts to prove it to everyone when he brings Tucker to the mall to help battle a Cerebus demon. During the fight, Tucker is injured but eventually comes to fruition that he is, in fact, the chosen one and as a result, Gary retires.

Our Take

The penultimate episode leaves us with a bunch of questions for the finale, but “Gary And His Birthday” is a great episode. Even if we only spent like five seconds acknowledging the fact that this is Gary’s birthday, the plot for the episode was excellent, and the jokes were some of the best written of the series so far. Also, the fight scenes with Tucker and the Cerebus were well-produced and featured genuine craftsmanship that certainly showcases the skills of the production team, even if for a couple of minutes. I question the Tucker/Gary montage as I felt it was necessary, but not long enough, strangely, but overall we get a good one.
