Review: Fish “Fish Get’s Revenge”

Overview:

A middle-aged African American man fails to get the job as a radio host. He then seeks revenge by irritating the heck out of various unsuspecting radio hosts by any means necessary. In the series premiere, Fish harasses an alien conspiracy theorist and an ultra pro-woman female host.

Our Take:

It’s pretty heartbreaking when you work so hard to get the job of your dreams only to wind up not getting it. Usually, people would pick themselves up and either try again or look for a different position. For Fish, however, the only way to recoup is to make everyone’s careers a living hell. The first episode of the new animated series from Dog Den Films LLC is what you expect based on the premise: A middle-aged man harassing radio hosts until they get all riled up on air, and that’s about it. There’s nothing much else to it, and the episode suffered hard because of it.

Aside from its acceptable use of animation, the episode is five torturous minutes of trolling and lazy adult comedy with no single hint of substance whatsoever. The premise mentioned that the main character Fish (or Jacob Fiskel) applied for the radio host job and got rejected, but the episode didn’t showcase that little piece of information. It just goes straight to the point without having a proper build-up. Because of this, the main character wound up being nothing but an irritable jerk with no character development. Not a funny irritable jerk. An unlikable irritable jerk. Even the comedy wasn’t that humorous and well-written. You would think that an episode involving a conspiracy theorist and a pro-woman host would gather some unexpected laughs, but nope. All I got was a bunch of jokes that were dull and mean-spirited.

As I mentioned before, the first episode of Fish was about five minutes long, which is somewhat forgivable, but it wasn’t enough to wash away the stench that stank up my senses. In terms of its structure, this should’ve been created for Youtube rather than for Amazon Prime and iTunes. It looked amusing at first based on its premise, but when I took a peek behind the cover, my amusement quickly turned into boredom just like that. Its severe lack of story and smart humor made the series premiere a stinky set-up for what’s to come in the future.
