Review: Family Guy “Young Parent Trap”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
A couple at Stewie’s school mistakes Peter and Lois for “younger parents”. So they invite them to live in a millennial apartment complex, leaving Meg and Chris home alone.

Our Take:
Based on the title alone, I thought this would be an episode that parodies the well-known classic “The Parent Trap”. You know, like what the show did with “Terminator” a few episodes ago. Boy, was I way off? Instead, it features Peter and Lois hanging out with the cool, younger parents.
The episode saw the Griffin parents being invited to hang out with a young couple who believes that Stewie is their first child. They saw this mistake as an opportunity to be young and have fun again. Thus, they decided to move into a fancy apartment filled with millennial parents. Although, Meg and Chris weren’t taking their idea too lightly. Meanwhile, Stewie, who joins Peter and Lois, hangs out with the other first kids that live with their young parents.
The episode is 30 minutes of Peter and Lois adapting to millennial stuff like modern smartphone apps. It was amusing to see them struggle with keeping the lie going at first. However, after a while, it made me realize how selfish they were for leaving Chris and Meg home alone. The same goes for the other young parents near the end. Thankfully, Chris and Meg managed to get back at their parents by disguising themselves as millennial parents and exposing them.
The jokes in this episode offered plenty of consistent chuckles, especially the ones related to millennials. The segment with the African man running and injuring his foot and the mirages at the music festival were also pretty humorous. Still, it’s a generic Griffin misadventure that showcased the carelessness of millennials with their first kids.
I mean, these so-called parents just left their kids alone without adult supervision to go to a music festival! As a result, every child in the pool except Stewie supposedly drowned in the swimming pool. The worst thing about this was that it was inconsequential to the main plot. It was meant to play for laughs, but to me, it just came off as disturbing. Seeing Stewie attempting to get the kids out of the pool and remove the leaf from the net was the only good part of these segments. Other than that, the Stewie segments were only there for the sake of comedy and nothing else.
The “Young Parent Trap” episode made me feel trapped in another generic series of comical Griffin events. This time with irresponsible millennial parents. It’s the kind of trap that I’m pretty sure no other parent wants to get caught in.
