Review: Elena of Avalor “A Day To Remember”

Certainly better than the band.

Spoilers Below

The Day of the Dead is a major holiday in Mexico. Families get together to celebrate and remember family member who have passed away. Elena and her family are creating an altar for her mother and father. As Elena and her grandparents work on the graveyard altar, Elena realizes that she can see ghosts. Thanks to her stay in the magical amulet, this is the one day that she can see spirits.

When Francisco admits to eating some of the altar sweets, Elena decides to run back to the castle to get more. However, she is ambushed by a spirit named Doña Angelica. Her grandchildren are about to sell the family restaurant. Reluctantly, Elena agrees to help. It turns out that they never received their grandmother’s cookbook so, as a result, the food they have been serving has been awful. With Doña Angelica’s help, Elena returns the cookbook to the family. Now they don’t have to sell the restaurant.

On a personal note, Isabel doesn’t feel like partying. She misses her parents too much. Elena, finally back at the castle, recalls times they spent with their parents. After hearing that the Day of the Dead is about remembering the dead, Isabel decides to go to the graveyard to celebrate with everyone else.

There aren’t too many shows in the US that talk about the Day of the Dead. You might have some makeup shows but nothing that talks about the actual holiday. I though that this episode handled it perfectly. There was nothing that would be too scary for kids while still talking about the meaning behind the day. A perfect way to teach kids about other cultures.
