Review: Duncanville “(Work) Marriage Story”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Jack gets jealous of Annie’s so-called work husband Garret when he sees that their relationship seems to be closer than his and his wife’s. He embarks on a plan to put them back into their place, meeting up with Garret’s husband Bryce and inviting them to a game night at the house. Meanwhile, Mr. Mitch gets a promotion to vice principal but is unable to keep the job because he chooses to help cover for Duncan and his friends instead.

Our Take:

Duncanville continues this week with the third episode of the third season. (Work) Marriage Story is a fun one that incorporates some new characters as well as spotlighting some old ones as well. Jack makes a new friend and Mr. Mitch loses everything and goes back to delivering Postmates…maybe not the happiest ending, but it was an entertaining journey along the way.

Things start off on an exciting note with Jack receiving a text from Annie and rushing to the office. But he quickly realizes that he isn’t really the person she’s most excited to see at work. Her ‘work husband’ Garret is her bestie in the office, and even Jing and Kimberly love him. So of course, Jack gets jealous and ends up calling Garret’s husband Bryce away from a flight to spill the juicy tea to him about his husband’s work relationship.

Bryce is unsurprised by the news and thinks it’s a good thing for his spouse to have a friend, but Jack isn’t buying it. He is buying more sangrias though, and it’s fun to see he and Bryce hit it off with their shared love of rock and roll. Even though Jack handles the whole situation pretty badly with Annie and Garret, the story does end on a nice note with he and Bryce keeping their friendship intact. It’s kind of cool to see a story of an adult man just making a friend—and Bryce’s tidbit about his copilot not corroborating the UFO sighting was hilarious.

What’s also hilarious is Duncan selling Mr. Mitch his liquid gold. Or as Yangzi calls it, that sweet, sweet tinkle. Because now that Mr. Mitch is vice principal, he’s got to take random drug tests, and unfortunately for him the principal won’t schedule them for later despite her obvious crush on him. This storyline definitely wasn’t quite as engaging as Jack’s drama, but it still had some funny stuff to see. Bex’s role as the instigator was cool, and who would’ve thought that deer would make such effective parking attendants?

In the end, (Work) Marriage Story does a nice job painting a hilarious portrait of relationship insecurity with Jack and Annie, plus it ties things up neatly at the end with letting Jack make a friend who isn’t a plunger. The conclusion to Mr. Mitch’s storyline isn’t quite as satisfying since he just goes back to working two jobs and losing his new house, but hey, at least he got some free entertainment with that cute musical number at the end.
