Review: Ducktales “The Spear of Selene”

SPEAR! SPEAR!

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

After a plane-crashes on the mythical Greek island of “Itha-quack” due to Launchpad’s incompetence. Scrooge, Launchpad, Huey, and Louie encounter Two Legendary Greek figures with mixed reactions, While Dewey & Webby search for possible clues regarding his mother’s disappearance with the only lead involving the titular “Spear of Selene”.

Our Take

It’s refreshing that for a reboot, the show has a lot of room to establish it’s own interpretations of Greek Myth’s & legends in the form of their versions of Zeus and Hercules, or in this case, “Storkules”. There are two separate subplots, but the one that seems to have the most focus would have to be on Dewey’s storyline as he’s conflicted on whether or not his long-missing mother Della was as honorable or heroic as the stories are told about her.

The other sub-plot that is focused the most on Zeus’s grudge against Donald & Scrooge over petty bullshit, and for a diety that’s thousands of years old, he’s just as petty as the Greek myths & legends make him out to be, compared to Storkules who behaves like a simple-minded do-gooder that simply holds the McDuck family in high regard much to Zeus’s dismay.

From an artistic & animation standpoint, everything pops out with colorful animation that flows so damn smoothly in tandem with funny moments in places. The voice cast each do an excellent job with what they’re given, especially David Tennant nailing it with every line as the Iconic Scrooge McDuck.

Above all, While “The Spear of Selene” doesn’t answer every question regarding Della’s whereabouts, It does give Dewey a modicum of peace and the determination to not give up finding out what happened to his long-missing mother, along with a comedic ending that even caught me off guard.

I hope they further touch upon this in the future as the Della sub-plot is something that’s left longtime fans puzzled over since the original series.
