Review: DuckTales “The Fight for Castle McDuck!”

Overview

A bitter feud between Scrooge and his sister, Matilda (Michelle Gomez), intensely spreads to the rest of the family as Phantom Blot (Giancarlo Esposito) attempts to steal a priceless artifact and destroy Castle McDuck once and for all.

Our Take

Within this episode, we have three separate subplots. Specifically, one involving Scrooges family whom we’ve met in Season 1, but here we meet for the first time Scrooge’s sister Matilda (Michelle Gomez) who unlike his financially successful brother, is a struggling entrepreneur looking for her next big score this time in the form of Emu farming. There’s also a running joke that seems to play with expectations as what starts off as a petty family squabble progressively escalating, with Webby unintentionally making things worse while Huey and Louie fight over how to seek out the artifact which is a mystical Bagpipe hidden within Castle McDuck.

We also get a separate subplot involving the F.O.W.L member Phantom Blot who’s part of the reason that McDuck Castle is having magic problems and also seeks out the mystical bagpipe as well. Hilariously, Blot’s hatred of magic, much like Bradford’s feelings towards the McDuck Family’s love for adventure, is rather biased and stupid. But we at least do see some semblance of character growth when Blot is accompanied by a F.O.W.L. agent named Pepper.

Overall, a fun yet passable episode that fleshes out McDuck’s family a bit while progressing the overarching F.O.W.L. storyline with one of its members. From how the episode was titled, I thought this would be a season finale, of sorts, but I guess we got a long way to go for that.
