Review: Doomsday Brothers “A Fistful of Larva”

Overview:

Gabe and Vijay have both landed themselves new girlfriends. However, neither of the girls are what the townsfolk would hope for their friends.

Gabe’s new friend is a freeloading stripper bug-lady who captures the town so that she can feed her babies when she gives birth. Gabe must make a choice between his friends and the girl that wants him to raise her children.

Vijay’s girlfriend is much less noticeable, in fact, she is invisible. After Danica mistakes her as imaginary she accidentally murders her. Though she may have done Vijay a favour.

Meanwhile, AENUS has been having nightmares causing his security system to act erratically at night. Naturally, Judith attempts to take advantage of his vulnerabilities.

Our Take:

It is starting to seem that the strength of Doomsday Brothers is in its consistency. The show doesn’t deliver anything ground-breaking or jokes never told on tv before. But on the same token, it is never boring or cliché. The show does its job of being funny and original yet is not here to push any boundaries.

The show has managed to premiere a healthy number of episodes now, and we have gotten to know all the characters one-by-one. While approaching the halfway mark of its first season the show is settling into its storytelling and humour. And it has become an enjoyable part of the Adult Swim Canada Sunday night line-up.

This episode focuses on Gabe and how his diplomacy often gets him in trouble. Bringing in a character that shows interest in him is enough to make Gabe forfeit himself and showcase how easy he is to take advantage of.

There is a nice little conclusion to the plot when we discover the only thing that will cause Gabe to break his diplomacy is when you mess with his friends and his brother.

Vijay finally gets a more significant role after being portrayed as the outsider of the town for the majority of the season. The stoner character is one of the most comedic players on the show but does not get nearly enough airtime. Giving the dartboard-headed mutant an invisible girlfriend was a clever touch on the aloof character.

Though it has been mentioned in many reviews previous, the Judith storyline was once again a distraction from the rest of the show. The interactions between Judith and the AI-powered bunker can be entertaining. Unfortunately, the same plot is repeated each week without any resolution. The premise is there for this to be a bright spot on the series, but it has become overused.

As I mentioned, the show’s strength is in its consistency. This was one of the more forgettable episodes of Doomsday Brothers thus far, and it wasn’t bad. There is a bad-guy-of-the-week theme to this show, and the episodes performance can vary a lot depending on the antagonist. And while this week’s monster had a good premise for Gabe’s character, she didn’t deliver the laughs and energy that most the Doomsday Brothers villains carry.
