English Dub Review: Dimension W “Loser”

Overview.

In the first episode we saw the sheer power of illegal coils. Now we see what happens when that power malfunctions in the worst way. Because coils tap into another dimension to draw power that link can go wrong, spectacularly wrong. Nightmare fuel wrong. Behind the crisp, orderly looking future and bright colors are some dark secrets. Loser is yet another victim of NT, and when he removes his mask all that’s behind it is a horribly scarred and disfigured face. I like the fact that all is not what it seems, which I think is the direction this series is going to continue in.

Mira starts to show off more of what she’s able to do. Kyoma barely communicates with the robot girl, which leaves her directionless on how to proceed. In a new, more modest outfit she manages to figure out how Loser is communicating outside of the zone he’s created to mask his theatrical theft. Yes, she’s still cute and proud of it, but she’s also capable.

That scene in Episode 2 with the dimension collapse has some very… ominous implications for what “Dimension W” actually is. I don’t think it’s just “a place of unlimited, free energy”. I have a feeling that it has something to do with branching realities, and that perhaps the power that is being generated is energy taken from other parallel dimensions. The NT Corp is clearly Sinister & Ominous, so the dark secrets that it is protecting should be interesting to see.

I don’t think you really have to get that far — maybe only to the end of the opening credits of episode 1 — to realize that the whole premise is about there being an unpaid price to pay for all the “free energy.”

I think we’re going to find, before much longer, that this “free unlimited energy” comes with a price tag that *will* affect their own world in some way, maybe even in an existential sort of way. There is a reason NT Corp is acting as heavy-handed as it is, and I’m sure it isn’t good for the world.

It looks like, on a small scale, that it’s pretty messy. But what’s happening on a larger scale… that should be even more interesting… and messy. The consequences of museum director’s actions when he tampered with illegal coils & accessing W were quite harmful & grotesque. Definitely an experience nobody ever wants to have. Also, it probably touches on why “illegal coils” are such a big deal.

I feel the way they treat Mira being a robot is really inconsistent.

There always mentioning that if it get out that Mira is a robot they’ll all be grabbed by NT. But robots exist in this futuristic society (we just saw one), so why is it such a big deal? Besides it’s really obvious she’s one since she has the tail and ear that she barely try to hide. Plus she has her coil in plain sight and they mentioned in previous episode that there are technology that can detect coil powered machines and subtly reveals that she’s using a standard legal coil which reduces her full power as she mentions not jumping as high as she use to. (Is this implying that illegal coils augment her better than standard ones? So many questions!)

What’s interesting to me here is that the show didn’t take the direction I thought it would. I thought we’ll get a couple of episodes of low-key encounters, as Mira and Kyoma live together, take on some thugs, and get used to one another. Nope. We’re moving right ahead to a mystery, that’s introduced this week and will be followed in next week’s episode, judging from its title.
What “low-key interactions” we’ll get will be alongside these, such as Mira’s ear-wags and actually having a belly-button. The show-makers (and supposedly the robot-makers in-show) clearly knew what they were aiming for – an impression that Mira is adorable. Kyoma, as he listened to Mira’s story, also realized that perhaps she does have “proper emotions”, and does care. And we also touched on a couple of extra mysteries, his connection to Mira’s creator, Doctor Yurizaki (and the other Doctor Yurizaki’s wife :P), as well as him being an ex-soldier in a world devoid of flesh and blood soldiers, and some “last mission” that makes him oppose New Tesla.

So now we learn why illegal coils are such a hazard, and the depths the New Tesla corporation is willing to go to keep their clean energy clean. Even though the picture is becoming clearer, the mystery is growing deeper. Now there is a third party gathering specific coils for unknown reasons. Kyoma has a semi-secret past as a soldier, Mira’s creator left her a big mystery to solve, and everything seems far more sinister. The animation is holding up well and there’s some nice, smooth action on display during the long chase scene. While Mira is still acting too cute for her own good she proves that she’s not just a mascot as she tracks down the accomplice of Loser. So far, so good.

With this new Anti-Hero, Let’s hope we see more of him in future episodes. 🙂
