Review: Deep Space 69 “The Hero With A Thousand Boners” ; “The Right Koalafications”

We may have a problem here.

With the constant shroud of crazy-fuckery in the last year and especially the last few months as it pertains to sexual conversations, it can be difficult to remember a time when people can joke about sex. Certainly series like Netflix’s Big Mouth, and Deep Space 69 remind us that there is a line between jokes and conduct, harassment, and misconduct and the balancing act on said line can be controversially hilarious, as it should be.

You really can’t get a lot of the jokes and humor that a series like Deep Space 69 effuses on regular television, making sex comedy a possible growth market for the future of adult animation. However, you’re gonna need to be more than a one pump chump if you wanna run with the big boys and I’m happy to say that Deep Space 69 keeps its trademark humor intact while evolving ever so slightly so as to take advantage of its new home.

For those that don’t know, Deep Space 69 follows the intergalactic space travels of Jay and his Koala pal Hamilton as they traverse the universe for sexual conquest. While Jay fucks around with anything with a pulse, Hamilton’s a bit more shy, and sometimes is taken advantage of because of his sweetness. This season sees the duo meet new friends, continue on their sexcapades, and head off to some sort of planet with a thousand breasts. Of course, the main crux of the show’s two episodes is that Jay’s philandering causes a bunch of crazy shit to go down but has the gun-slinging acumen and quick-wit to get out of most situations.

My problem is…censorship. Yes, for some reason someone made the production choice to blur out the nudity which is kind of absurd when you realize that one has to pay good money to subscribe to VRV/Mondo in the first place, only to turn around and get censored material. The producers of the series need to recall that they aren’t on Youtube anymore, and they’ve gotta compete with the big boys, and you don’t do that with self-censoring. There are literally scenes in “The Right Koalafications” that are completely ruined because of the amount of blur put into the episode, which is really disheartening.

Fortunately, the series is still funny, and you get a hero in Hamilton that you wanna root for every single week because of his naivete. With new additions to the crew and an arc conclusion that could end the world, I’m super excited to see more of Deep Space 69. Let’s just hope the producers can get out of their own way with the censorship which costs this first quarter of episodes dearly.
