Review: Craig of the Creek “Dog Decider”

Is this episode worth deciding over?

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

Unable to make tough & important decisions, Craig decides to put his choices into the hands of a common yard-dog named Fred who is worshipped by a strange group of kids who call themselves “Fredites”.

Our Take

There’s a comedic surrealness of children going to a dog from a complete stranger’s backyard to help them make important decisions. In many respects, the “Fredites” kinda feel like a social commentary on the fanatical & destructive aspects of cultism, only here, it’s played for laughs.

The episode does slow down in places where Craig becomes almost a little too dependant on Fred’s decisions to a point, much to Kelsey’s dismay who’s all about embracing the “Trust your Gut” mentality without coming to a group of kids who blindly think a Dog has all the answers.

A lot of the jokes were strong and had me laughing out loud at the absurdity of it’s characters, such as a story Craig tells about a bad movie rental decision, or JP’s desire to find “Dinosaur eyeballs” along with what happens near the very end with jokes that caught me of guard in ways that you really didn’t know what to expect and sometimes that’s a good thing.

Above all, “Dog Decider” was a welcoming addition to a show that consistently embraces it’s weirdness while staying grounded in reality with its humor and characters. If there’s are any lessons to take from this episode, It’s that sometimes making your own choices maybe scary, but so is the unpredictable nature of life itself.
