Review: Corner Gas Animated “None of Your Beefwax”

The town learns a valuable lesson about eating locally… it’s gross.

Overview:

Lacey continues her pursuit of adding culture to Dog River by introducing farm-to-table meals at The Ruby.  However, she did not expect the townspeople to have such backlash towards eating local food.  When the towns favourite cow, Carlene, is the latest victim of Lacey’s cooking everybody handles it differently.  Oscar attempts to eat the entire cow as some sort of vengeance, while officer Karen uses the opportunity to teach people of her newly found vegetarianism.  Hank discovers that the town has not been receiving any deliveries because the cow was such a well-known landmark that drivers are lost without her.

Meanwhile, Davis has invested into some home security in the way of guard bees.  After being reminded that he could also harvest honey from his pets, he gets to work. Unfortunately, Wanda has been using the bees for her own new candle business.

Our Take:

Good old harmless Canadian content, this is about the epitome of how offensive this show can get.  Taking on the farm-to-table movement is as controversial as you will find from this show about rural Saskatchewan.  I feel like they made some valid points about eating locally, I could see rural communities tending to get tired of their local meals, and I love that Dog River had made such a connection with Carlene the cow that it impacted the entire community when she was gone.

I had mentioned in my review last week that this series is running a risk by incorporating so many characters into the animated revival. However, I think it is fair to say that they are doing a great job at blending all of the town’s happenings into well-rounded episodes.  The theme of local food was kept throughout this story, right down to the beeswax candles that you would find in towns just like this all over Canada.

Lacey has always been one of this shows strengths, and her moving to the small town created the premise that made Corner Gas so popular. Despite the many years that Lacey has probably lived in Dog River by this point, seeing her deal with farm life is as entertaining as ever, especially when it involves a chicken with its head cut off.

This was a fun little episode, and I enjoyed the theme.  Out of the shows few episodes that we’ve been able to watch, I wouldn’t say that it beats the previous releases.  One of the things I have liked most about the new Corner Gas is that they have utilized the animation to elevate the humour. Unfortunately, this particular episode lacked in that and felt more like a classic live-action episode.
