Review: Camp Camp “Jasper Dies At The End”

Some David backstory.

Spoilers Below:

The main trio is stuck with David on their way to a hospital, after accidentally trapping Space Kid in a spaceship. David is inspired to talk about the first day he fell in love with Camp Campbell.

Campbell awards the Order of the Sparrow to Jasper, who is instructed to go on a mission to retrieve a pine branch from the woods. Young David, who’s called Davy, is somewhat of a troublemaker, announces that he doesn’t like the woods. It’s suggested that David joins Campbell on the trip, much to David’s displeasure.

They get lost along the way and end up nearly circling the same tree ten times. Just as Jasper manages to spot the pine tree, he tumbles off a cliff. David tries to save him, but Jasper slips and falls. Campbell tries to kill David for being a witness but is stopped by Jasper announcing that he’s still alive. David insists on saving Jasper, but Campbell gets them lost again. David points out that they can follow the direction of the stream down to where Jasper might be.

Jasper waits for the rescue but is dragged away by a bear, leaving his shoe behind. David, knowing that Jasper would never part with his light up shoes, so he follows the bear tracks into a cave. The bears surround Campbell and David, but David uses the light up shoes as a distraction, as Campbell dispatches them. They make it back to the camp, and David is given a badge for his bravery.

David wraps up the story, but they had passed the hospital two hours ago, and run out of gas.

Overview:

Jasper, despite the title, didn’t die at the end.

This is a bit more of David’s backstory. He wasn’t as much of a troublemaker as Max, but he was fairly disillusioned and wasn’t interested in camping at all. However, despite his rebellious attitude, David does care about other people and is willing to go out of his comfort zone to help Jasper. Campbell is completely unwilling to help Jasper or make the situation better, so David has to act as motivation the entire trip. Being rewarded for his bravery instills the camp spirit inside him, even if he fails to realize that Campbell himself is a terrible influence.
