Review: Camp Camp “A Camp Camp Christmas, Or Whatever”

It’s snowing in the summer.

Overview:

Thanks to climate change, it’s snowing in the summer. Although everyone thinks it’s strange, Nikki asks if they can celebrate Christmas early. By convincing David that celebrating the holidays will lead to more fun, Nikki gets her celebration. Max and Neil ask her what she likes so much about the holidays, and she struggles to come up with an answer.

Our Take:

It’s the Camp Camp Christmas special, and they explain the snow in summer through global warming. It’s inexplicably started to snow, and everyone is thrilled (except Gwen, who has to shovel snow). Nikki is excited for Christmas, but she can’t figure out exactly what she likes about it. Max is no help, being a cynic, and neither is Neil, since he’s Jewish and doesn’t celebrate the holiday.

After going through the kids having fun in the snow, Nikki can think of things that make winter fun but aren’t necessarily specific to Christmas. In fact, a lot of the things about Christmas are either material, religious, or nonspecific to the holidays. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what makes Christmas fun, but Nikki decides that it’s people showing their appreciation for each other that she really adores. While Max points out that’s also nonspecific, Nikki says that’s what makes it nice because everyone can do it. It’s not tied to religion or finances, simply good will and togetherness.

While it’s a nice moral tale like the usual Christmas specials, the jokes tended to fall flat. The most amusing jokes were likely the snowman coming to life and the climate change PSA at the end of the episode. It very much fit the spirit of holiday specials, but it ended up being mostly okay. Nothing too special worth noting, but it wasn’t terrible. Just okay.
