Review: Broad City “Mushrooms”

While not one of the craziest trip sequences we’ve seen animated, Abbi and Ilana are so good, that it doesn’t matter.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

On this very special episode of Broad City, Abbi and Ilana eat a bunch of mushrooms while enjoying their weekend, but when Ilana gets called in by Dara to deliver macaroons to her party, the duo have an evening they may not soon forget.

Abbi meets up with a young couple who tease doing a threesome but she’s unable to get into the experience despite the fact that she’s always wanted to take part in a three-way. Ilana, on the other hand, appears to have gotten a bit of an advance on her career, that is until she kills Dara’s cat and is officially fired from her job.

Abbi ends the evening by unfriending and unfollowing Lincoln on all of the socials.

Our Take

Despite being advertised as an animated episode by a lot of different outlets, really only a portion, approximately half, of “Mushrooms” is animated. Quite frankly, I actually think that’s half of the fun of the episode because you get a good sense of when the girls are taking off on their trip and then when they come down, and then when they smoke, how the two psychtropes kinda mesh before finally giving way and detailing the consequences. I think perhaps the best-produced parts of the episode were when Ilana and Abbi’s eyes were animated during live-action scenes because that’s gotta be the hardest part for Mike Perry’s studios and they did a fabulous job.

Also, let’s not forget that we have the stellar performances by Abbi and Ilana. Being careful not to kind of delve into all too familiar territory when it comes to putting together jokes for the trip scenes and instead of coming up with some of the silliest climax scenes the young season has had so far. I mean, would ANY woman on TV today be brave enough to be filmed with no clothes on and just a nine-inch strap-on? I’m not sure. These girls constantly break the rules and this time they got to add some color.
