Review: Blark and Son “Clovis La Roche”

Regina is back!

Overview (Spoilers Below):

After an evening of perusing the Blark-verse equivalent of creepypasta with Regina, Son stumbles upon the story of Clovis La Roche, a part-alligator boogieman type who sucks the souls of unsuspecting children into his accordion. Son is sent into a fit of terror when he learns Clovis also places the fingers of his victims into a bindle, and steals their hat.

The next morning, Blark bursts in to announce that he’s made breakfast, and asks Son what’s got him so upset. Son, wearing protective gear made from gauze and duct tape, explains the story of Clovis La Roche to his Dad, who is unimpressed.

However, Blark can’t help but interfere. He enlists the help of handsome Stacy next door, who suggests he present Clovis to Son, to give him power over the situation. What handsome Stacey didn’t expect was to be roped into playing the part of the killer, but he owed Blark a favor for fixing his AC.

Once the scene is set, Blark bursts in on Son again, to tell him to come into the living room. Son declares that he will spend all of his time from now on playing his League of Legends champion Trindimir, in his room where he’s safe. Blark explains that even though Trindimir has limitless power in the game, it is Son who makes his victories possible. Without Son, he couldn’t even swing a sword.

Just as Son is reaching peak empowerment, Stacey bursts in after the alligator mask caused him to have a claustrophobic episode. Son finds his inner power and proceeds to attack the costumed therapist, and overcomes his fear of Clovis.

Our Take

This episode had us laughing from the beginning. The tale of Clovis is as bizarre and creative as it is terrifying to Son. We all can relate to the tween years where we’d see a scary Reddit post and spend days obsessing.

It was nice to have an episode which brought Son more into the forefront. Even though the last half of the episode was dominated by Blark, the episode’s arc revolved around Son learning to overcome fear.

Regina makes a brief appearance at the beginning of the episode. She doesn’t seem quite as interested in Son as he is to her, but the friendly exchange has us rooting for Son and Regina!

Overall, this episode was both hilarious and interesting and is one of the best in the series so far.
