Review: Blark and Son “A Cult of Fire”

Overview:
Son and Regina created a new fire cult. Filled with temptation by the new cult, Junior seeks to burn something of his father’s. Meanwhile, Blark and Fletch are enjoying their new combat boots.

Our Take (Spoilers Below):

We’ve gone from a talking psychotic chimp to creating a cult over the span of two days. That has to be a new record. Today’s episode reflected that it picks up after the end of yesterday’s episode, in which Son’s chimpanzee brother escaped from captivity. The ending also gave me a brief tease on what’s possibly going to happen later on in the season. Aside from those two things, this is just another ordinary day for Blark, Son, and the gang, and by ordinary, I mean bizarre and wacky. Everything that worked in yesterday’s episode was present here in “A Cult of Fire”, ranging from the vocal performances to its loopy humor. Although, I happened to like it a bit less than the chimpanzee scenario.

Son and his girlfriend Regina (voiced by Deborah Baker Jr.) are the episode’s main focus as they created a fire cult because of their desire to burn things. This small bit had plenty of amusing moments that I enjoyed, including Chris Mintz-Plasse’s performance as Son. However, they fell a bit short compared to the humor from the last episode in terms of its narrative. I don’t think anything’s going to top the crazy chimpanzee bit unless next weekend’s episode has anything to say about it. I also thought the second plot point in which Blark and Fletch break stuff with their combat boots was a sufficient distraction from all of the hellfire stuff. It wasn’t as hilarious as I wanted it to be, but it felt nice to see the grownups do some stupid and fun things.

The fire cult episode has the show playing with its strengths yet again, such as its wacky adult comedy and the cast’s vocal performances. When it comes to the plot, it didn’t top the absurdity of Son’s deranged chimpanzee brother. However, it’s entertaining enough for me to keep it away from the pits of Hell. This is a solid start for the show’s second season, and I hope that the upcoming episodes are as zany as the first two.
