Review: Black Dynamite ”Sweet Bill’s Badass Singalong Song or Bill Cosby Ain’t Himself”

Title screen

Spoilers Below

Black Dynamite and crew run into a movie in production only after BD beats the shit out of the stars. The irony about this set, is that everyone from the BD crew looks a LOT like the stars of the movie. Melvin the director claims its just a coincidence, and takes off when he gets a call from Bill Cosby. Afterwards, he is accosted by the Black Puma group whom claims that Melvin owes the militant group money. Meanwhile, Jim Kelly (the guy who plays Black Dynamite in the movie) gets thrown through Melvin’s door after he touches Black Dynamite’s car. Melvin wants to keep him around for protection which looks like it may be needed because the entire cast gets jumped and kidnapped by a young Bill Cosby.

The real Black Dynamite crew gets used as the actors in the film, while the characters inspired by them are getting the shit kicked out of them by Bill Cosby. Black Dynamite heads to the strip club to warn others of being kidnapped, and as luck would have it, BD captures some would-be suitors. Unfortunately, these guys ain’t for real, but they know all about Bill Cosby’s plan with the actors and they make sure to tell Black Dynamite everything. Turns out, Cosby is trying to build another hit-show, but the actors are having none of it. This causes Bill to flip out and order the actors to be ‘programmed’.

While the Whorephanage crew is being laughed off stage, Black Dynamite seems to be down on his luck in finding Cosby. Thankfully, he gets a lead, and Black Dynamite shows up to save the actors playing as his crew RIGHT before Bill is able to go really crazy. Just as it looks as Black is going to make the save, he gets jumped by Sidney Poitier, but Momma shows up to make the save. Black Dynamite CLEANS HOUSE of all of Bill’s men and the movie is saved.

You know what’s great about Black Dynamite? Despite the fact that some of these episodes were written a couple of years ago, they are still timely. Similarly, it was only a few months ago that we had a Kim K. episode of The Boondocks, and now she’s all over ‘breaking the internet’. This week we get an episode where Bill Cosby is the villain, timed with the real-Cosby getting booted off of Letterman for rape allegations. AThe idea of two teams of Black Dynamite was really funny, and Cosby’s evil plan was just so perfect. Unfortunately, I wasn’t crazy about the Moms Mabley depiction as a sex-crazed lunatic due to the fact that when the legendary comedienne was going strong, she was in fact a lesbian. I also though this was an episode where we were probably robbed of quite a few punch lines due to censors, but overall this one tasted almost as code as a Jell-O pudding cup…ALMOST!
