Review: American Dad “The Witches of Langley”

Do you kids remember Semisonic?

Spoilers Below

“The Witches of Langley”, this week’s new American Dad! episode was a strange one. There were definitely funny spots. But ever since I saw the preview clip, I was kind of dreading it. It was admittedly a hopeful, optimistic kind of dread– since last week’s American Dad! was so good.

The cold open sets up the story- Steve and his friends keep losing their lunchroom table, and they need a way to assert their spot amongst all the cliques at the school. Eventually, Steve finds Roger has set up a shop of oddities, which has a magic book. Steve and the boys start getting into magic.
Meanwhile, Francine shows interest in selling funnel cakes, as Klaus entices Stan with the allure of remembering bands from the 1990s. The 90s band thing is actually really funny- they just keep dropping names of 90s bands. Hilarious.
Steve and his friends at first agree to avoid the evil “blood magic” spells in the back of the book, but of course, Steve goes too far and ignores the agreement. But first, there’s a really funny montage to Steve Miller Band’s “Abracadabra”, and Steve dances around a little. Principal Lewis is apparently a witch hunter (is any of this canon?)
At the end of “The Witches of Langley”, the storylines converge. Stan and Klaus have set up a 90s music festival where Semisonic plays, Francine is selling funnel cakes, and there is a final witch showdown. Pretty strange stuff.
Anyway, not one of the stronger episodes of the season. It’s not terrible, but it’s just not great, either. There was only a funny spot or two, Hayley and Jeff were barely utilized, and there were no other characters really involved (how great would it have been to bring back Steve’s ex for this??) That said, the Roger character was great.
Hoping for better next week. We still have a lot of episodes to go this season!
