Review: American Dad “Da Flippity Flop”

Spoilers Below

Two guys in the arctic discover a frozen body, but who is it?  Turns out, its Klaus’ human body and the CIA has it in custody. At first, the fish tries to kill himself, but Fran convinces Stan to take Klaus to his office so as to check out his frozen corpse. Problem is when the guys finally get to the office, they find the body somewhat decomposed so Klaus flips out and knocks out Stan then switches bodies with him.  Francine finds out and she finds it hysterical! She agrees to let Klaus use Stan’s body for a few days but the fish plans on keeping it. Soon, Stan does all sorts of shit with the body, like smoking, getting prostitutes, and riding horseback. Oh yea, did I mention heroin?? Yep and lots of heroin. When Francine hears about what Klaus did, he runs off so that he can complete a ski jump. But, before he goes Stan decides to switch into Klaus’ decomposed human body. Everyone gets to the ski lodge and Stan goes after Klaus. Stan and Klaus race down a snow mountain with Stan coming out on the winning end…kinda.

Roger opens a gym and he wants to sell Steve on a membership. Problem is, Roger is a tough seller. So much so he keeps calling and leaving threatening messages to make him sign up. Steve heads over to the gym and yells at Roger to make him stop calling, but instead he signs up for a month.  Unfortunately, when he gets there for his first workout, the gym gets turned into a Chinese restaurant and now Steve has to be the delivery boy.

Cutaway Gags

Jump City!, Dame Judi Dench

It would be easy to call this plot a rip of the movie Change-Up and yea you’d be right except for the fact that American Dad has been around a lot longer. That and the way the AD writers are more and more integrating great science fiction intricacies into their plots ala last week.’s episode with space travel. This week we get to play with zombie humor, something that I don’t think any show has really nailed since the Treehouse of Horror deals over on The Simpsons. That said, the Seth shows are usually a little grosser than The Simpsons and it showed with key scenes like Hayley choking on pieces of zombie skin and body parts dismembering whilst racing down a ski slope.  We also got a little taste of old-school American Dad that was a bit more Family Guy influenced with the Jump City! and Judi Dench bits. The drawback this episode was the Steve/Roger side plot that had a lame twist near the end and didn’t even get us any kind of conclusion. This show demonstrated to us last week that American Dad can pull of single plots and not resort to dual plots that aren’t as good. We will go into more detail about this next week with the Season Review, but this week was solid thanks to Klaus.
