Review: Adventure Time Elements “Winter Light”

To the Ice Kingdom.

Spoilers Below:

In Sky Kingdom, Finn, Jake, and the Ice King formulate a plot to sneak into the Ice Kingdom. Finn and Jake want more information, but the Ice King wants Betty back, who he has since nicknamed ‘Weird Lady’. The Ice Kingdom fortress is underground, so they can’t land with their Skyhooks. Ice King suggests going in through the sewers, but Finn doesn’t find that very appealing. When he peers over the edge, the Ice King mistakes that to be an incentive and shoves him off. Jake and the Ice King jump after him, and they fall into the large ice dome.

Inside, it’s all dark and lit up like the starry sky, so the Ice King has to light a lantern. He makes a sled for them to travel on, and they spot a few monsters living in the dark. The sled accidentally hits a ramp, and they all go flying. The ramp turns out to be a house, with an ice-ified Carroll living inside. Although she’s been turned into ice, Carroll enjoys being solid and prefers this life to being a cloud. Finn offers to have her join them, but she declines.

They travel towards a pyramid, which is surrounded by frozen penguins. They spot a hole to crawl through and parachute inside to a giant room filled with statues of the Elementals, and a band of ice-foxes playing music. Right before they can get their bearings, Carol enters the room, having tattled on them to Patience. Finn attacks Patience, but her body can evaporate at will, and he ends up falling harmlessly through her.

Finn demands that Patience fixes Ooo, but she says that she can’t, even if she wanted to. She explains that she was frustrated with the other Elementals’ denial of their birthright, and cast a spell that tapped into their true natures. Unfortunately, the spell was too effective, and they became consumed by their powers. She had prepared a party to celebrate but is too disheartened to follow through.

As the Ice King eats the party food, he realizes that the table is actually Betty, frozen in ice. He grabs her and jumps out of the pyramid. Finn starts to follow, but Jake has been overwhelmed by ice magic. Regardless, Finn grabs Jake, and they all retreat to the Cloud Kingdom.

The Ice King makes them all some pepper soup, which has enough spice to reverse ice magic. Betty and Jake both thaw, and Finn wonders how they’re going to proceed. Betty says that even though she’s been drained of her magic, the Enchiridion might be able to help. Luckily, Finn still has Farmworld’s Enchiridion. He passes it along to Betty, and she starts laughing maniacally.

Overview:

We finally find out what happened to Ooo, and why Bubblegum was acting so strangely. She has been taken over entirely by the Elemental, and so her personality has been degraded. As the embodiment of candy, she is warm and caring but also is insistent that candy is the ultimate and only way to be.

Even Patience is not immune to this. She was excitable and filled with cunning and energy before, but as the Ice Elemental, she has toned down significantly. No longer scheming, she has become lethargic and apathetic, something that has extended to everyone that lives in the Ice Kingdom.

Betty has the power and knowledge to potentially find a cure, but it seems doubtful that she will follow through on it. Her only path so far has been finding a way to reverse the curse of the Ice Crown, and she seems uncaring about anything else. It doesn’t seem certain that she’s entirely on the heroes’ side.
