Reddit AMA Recap: Justin Roiland Talks “Rick and Morty”, “Solar Opposites”, & His New Game “Trover Saves The Universe”

Here’s what he had to say!

The one and only Justin Roiland was in between episode edits for the upcoming season of Chris Evans’ favorite series Rick and Morty to talk via Reddit about all things regarding the Adult Swim hit series, a Solar Opposites note (that we already knew), and his new game Trover Saves the Universe which is out now for PlayStation and PC. There might be more if Justin gets done with his edits, but those could take a while, but he adds anything notable we’ll post it here. In the meantime, here are some highlights from the Reddit AMA.

On working with Dan Harmon on Rick and Morty

Like working with a brother. Dan is like a brother to me. As close as you can get while not actually being related. He is family to me. So all the good and bad that comes with working with a sibling, and that’s not to say it’s bad. It’s really good. Honestly, people think we fight and we really don’t. We have eerily similar comedic sensibilities and interests and only a few times here and there do we disagree about something tonally or comedically. Like, I can count on one hand across the life of the show how many times we have passionately disagreed about a joke or moment. Our biggest differences are when to say it’s done or… good enough, moving on. For better or for worse when there’s a joke or a moment that doesn’t jump out at me as legitimately not good I’m fine with moving along with what we have. A lot of times I even like what we have quite a bit. Harmon would punch up every line at each stage of production if he could. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s about making something perfect, and a lot of our best episodes are that way because of that pursuit.

On whether Snowball the dog will return in an upcoming episode

I would love to see Snowball again! It’s always just a matter of doing it for the right reason. Having the best story to tell, and not just fan service.

On what he hates most about Rick and Morty fans

Better way to ask this would be “What do you hate the most about humanity” because a fan base is just a sampling of humanity. And my answer would be… a bunch of stuff. But honest to god, Rick and Morty fans (That I’ve met) have all been the best. We have a really diverse fan base which I am really proud of. I’ve only done a few conventions but everyone is so damn nice, and people I meet in the world.. always super nice.

On the show’s fascination with multiple universes

Dan and I have always been fascinated with multiple realities, what life actually is, and other smarty pants things. (sorry I’m high from a weed edible) We have definitely gotten interesting reactions from fans. One guy told me he thinks he can control reality. Who knows. Maybe he can. Who are we to say until his alleged powers have been properly debunked. Speaking of multiple realities… has anyone see Dan Harmon’s “Laser Fart” series from the 2000’s? He has an episode where he plays with multiple realities and it blew my mind when I first saw it. And on House of Cobsys it was going to be revealed that the Cosbys weren’t clones at all, but they were being pulled from other realities. That’s why the big dino aliens showed up. To warn them of what they were doing.

How the collaboration with Teenage Engineering and Rick and Morty came to be.

The Crowscrowscrows guys introduced me to them when I was in Berlin working on Accounting+ and they blew my mind. I came back to the USA and started looking for them and ended up getting them all and the OP1. Became obsessed with Teenage Engineering. I just reached out via email and asked if they were familiar with Rick and Morty and if they would want to make a R&M pocket operator and thank god they were and wanted to. The collab was smooth and really fun. Got to check out their offices last year when I was in Stockholm. I love all those folks. The R&M pocket operator is pretty limited so I expect it to sell out fast. It’s got the same functionality as the speak, along with more bells and whistles. Being able to work with amazing people like that is just mind-blowing.

On whether everything in Rick and Morty has been connected since the beginning and if “Morty’s Mindblowers” kind of fouled everything up.

Mindblowers was a sketch episode, and honestly… we don’t know what morty a lot of those memories were pulled from. Ricks might even trade them with other Ricks. Like baseball cards.

Justin reinforces Mary Mack being part of his new series Solar Opposites coming next year.

Mary Mack,  I actually met her because we cast her on my new animated half-hour comedy “Solar Opposites” to air exclusively on HULU in 2020.

Rick and Morty returns this November with new episodes.
