Reddit AMA Recap: Brittney Karbowski talks Voice Acting

Brittney Karbowski is best known for roles like Wendy Marvel (Fairy Tail), Mikoto Misaka (A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun), and Black Star (Soul Eater). Recently, her performance in Food Wars aired on Toonami, so she paid Reddit a visit to answer their questions regarding her stellar acting career.

On playing Wendy Marvel from Fairy Tail:
Ironically, she’s the most unlike me of all my characters. When I do Wendy, I think of myself as being small. Part of me is like Wendy…I think of the bubbly happy side of myself. I’m kind of Butt Jiggle Gang Wendy. My favorite character. Honestly, I love getting to play so many. I actually really like not choosing. Lots of people get type cast. I’ve been really fortunate.

On how she got into voice acting:

I was playing Janet in the Rocky Horror show and Matt Greenfield (an OG from Old school ADV films) came to see it. He asked me to come in. I was like to sing? And he said no. I came in to record bit parts on Gantz. He said “we will see if you can do this for a career… scream like you’re getting stabbed to death”. I did. He liked it. The rest is history.

On advice for aspiring voice actors:
I would say never give up. Don’t defeat yourself before you’ve started. Other people will do that for you. I used to think the exact same thing and now I act for a living and haven’t been on stage in years. Though I miss it-I wouldn’t trade my path for anything.

On finding the right voice for a character:
I ask myself a few questions when I get a new role: How old is the character? What sex is the character? What does the character want to accomplish? Then I definitely try my best to match what the Japanese lay down.

On roles people don’t recognize her from:
A lot of people don’t know I’m Pride in Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.

On what Quirk she wish she could have:
Sending farts.

Food Wars airs Saturday nights on Toonami. You can also hear Karbowski as Last Order on A Certain Scientific Accelerator, airing on Fridays on Funimation’s website.
