Recap: Adult Swim’s Teenage Euthanasia Comic-Con @ Home 2021

Back in December, Adult Swim announced that it picked up a new animated comedy series that is sure to knock everyone dead. That series is known as Teenage Euthanasia. The show, which centers on a family working at a funeral home, is slated to premiere on Adult Swim this fall. Comic-Con@Home offers some deadly details on what we would expect from this upcoming coming-of-all-ages comedy series.

The panel features creators Alyson Levy and Alissa Nutting, along with Scott Adsit (co-director and co-executive producer), Maria Bamford (voice of Trophy Fantasy), Jo Firestone (voice of Euthanasia “Annie” Fantasy), Bebe Neuwirth (voice of Baba). Tim Heidecker moderated the virtual. The co-creators talk about the show’s concept, which they began working on in 2016, how they presented it, and how they became involved with it. They also mentioned that they wanted to make a female-led cartoon that centers on the relationship between mother and daughter and some commentary on generational trauma.

The parts in the panel that stood out for me were the discussion about the production process during the COVID pandemic and their favorite mother-daughter relationship moments in the show. Seeing that the other animated shows and movies continued production through the pandemic, it should come as no surprise that Teenage Euthanasia became one of those examples. I happened to giggle at the “Pizza Train” bit when they’re discussing communicating virtually with background noise. They also mentioned changing the rules in animation and shared some helpful advice about sharing ideas with the world.

At the end of the panel, they shared a clip of Teenage Euthanasia, which to me looks like any other adult animated show on Adult Swim regarding its style. But who knows? Maybe it will wind up surprising the viewers based on what they’re saying about it. Teenage Euthanasia premieres this fall on Adult Swim. The entire panel is available to watch on the Comic-Con International Youtube channel.
