Recap: The Patrick Star Show Comic-Con@Home 2021

After making its debut on Nickelodeon two weeks ago, The Patrick Star Show takes its random silliness straight to Comic-Con@Home. The panel, which SYFY Wire’s Tara Bennett moderated, featured voice actors Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Tom Wilson (Cecil Star), Cree Summer (Bunny Star), Jill Talley (Squidina Star), and Dana Snyder (GrandPat). Also joining in on the fun were the show’s executive producers Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller.

The panel showcased that the spin-off show, along with Kamp Koral, came from an idea of expanding the SpongeBob universe, according to Marc. They explained that the format resembles a sitcom/variety show and how its storytelling rules and humor are similar to Patrick’s surreal personality. They then performed a table read of the episode, “Stair Wars”, which featured a storyboard reel and the actors and crew performing their roles in real-time. While the episode is far from perfect, in my opinion, it was still cool to see the people’s vocal talents in person, or in this case, on screen.

After the table read, Marc delivered an insight on the show being a “deconstruction” of television, its concept, and the idea of making many different Patricks regarding the character design. The cast also talked about the experience of being a part of the SpongeBob universe and the spin-off show. The moment with Fagerbakke talking about being in the series with the other cast was such a delight in my eyes because he’s been a prominent part of the SpongeBob family for more than 20 years. Without him, the franchise wouldn’t be where it is today. Vincent Waller later explained that The Patrick Star Show distinguished from their earlier works regarding the animation by using watercolor and paper for most of the show.

The panel concludes with the cast and crew sharing their favorite moments and episodes of The Patrick Star Show and SpongeBob in general. Bill suggested his dynamic with Jill Talley, Dana Snyder is happy to hear some conversations with other members, and Cree Summer enjoys being a part of the universe. You can watch the entire panel discussion at the Comic-Con International YouTube channel. The Patrick Star Show airs Friday nights on Nickelodeon.
