NYCC: First Look at Robert Kirkman’s Invincible and Live Virtual Panel

Long before Robert Kirkman became a household name thanks to his little zombie show, The Walking Dead, he was already making waves as an innovator in the comic book industry. One of the titles that Kirkman created that put him on the map was Invincible.

The story follows Mark Grayson, the son of the world’s greatest superhero, as he discovers his own powers. But as he enters the forbidden landscape of superpowers, he discovers the dark side that comes along with it.

Thanks to Amazon Prime Video, who already is changing the game in superhero adaptations with The BoysInvincible will be making it to our screens. The new animated series planned for 2021 boasts an all-star cast including Steven Yeun, Seth Rogan, Sandra Oh, J.K. Simmons, and Mark Hamill.

Today, series creator, Robert Kirkman, offered us a little more insight into one of the most anticipated adult animated series. New York Comic-Con, which is being broadcast virtually on YouTube this year brought us this special, yet short, panel, as well as our first trailer to what promises to be an epic series.

The excitement for Invincible is palpable, especially through the excitement of panel moderator Hector Navarro who claims the source material to be his “favourite comic series of all-time”. Though Kirkman is equally stoked promising “if you think that you have seen something like this before; you haven’t”.

The most important topic at hand for fans during the panel was how closely the new series will follow the events of the source material. Of which Kirkman assures that all of the major events will hit screens.

The show will be a direct recreation of the story, but with “some spice added” and twists to keep loyal fans at the edge of their seats.

Additionally, valuable to the comic series was the extreme violence that helped define the colourful world separate from the superhero classics of DC and Marvel. Again, Kirkman confirms that the animated world will closely resemble that of the comic. If anything, Kirkman says that the series will be “possibly more gruesome” thanks to the movement of animation.

The only thing fans can anticipate being different from their favourite comic are improvements.

Fresh character designs from original artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley and tightened storylines will only make the show better.

As for exclusives, Kirkman did let one character slip that we have yet to hear confirmed for the series. Battle Beast, who is a fan favourite, and one of Invincible’s more formidable foes will “100% be in the show”. More so, the character will be voiced by Star Trek’s Worf, Michael Dorn.

If you were not yet excited for this animated series to hit your screen, then today’s panel and trailer will change that for you. In 2021, Amazon Prime Video will drop another series that goes above and beyond. Added to Robert Kirkman’s established world-building and storytelling, Invincible will reshape adult animation and the superhero genre simultaneously.
