NYCC 2020: Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. Panel Recap

From the mind of comedian Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum comes a stop-motion series about Marvel’s best known crazy torso person, MODOK. Following the misadventures of this would-be supervillain tycoon as balances an evil business and a family, this Hulu Original was originally ordered with several other potential animated Marvel Comics based comedies that would have eventually crossed over into “The Offenders”, but with the shuttering of Marvel Television last year, it seems MODOK is the only show to survive this. Just as well, as Oswalt and Blum show that they are willing to take their long cultivated nerdiness and pull from every corner of the Marvel Universe to make their jokes. Also on the panel were Aimee Garcia, Ben Schwartz, and Melissa Fumero as main cast members created for the series, MODOK’s suburban family who deal with his mishaps.

Much of the panel focused on the development of the series, getting involved with Stoopid Buddy Studios, who are already known for stop-motion shows like Robot Chicken, Titan Maximum, and Supermansion. Their cumulative attention to detail on their props and figures is also put into this series as Oswalt notes when discussing how the show came together. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast revel in their characters and the potential to play around with this comedic version of the Marvel universe, as well as getting the chance to go their own way with this less expected tone.

Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. premieres on Hulu in 2021.
