Netflix Really Needs To Find A New Hit Adult Animated Comedy Before 2020 Lets Out

HBO MAX launched with a sole adult animated comedy Close Enough that, despite no help from their marketing department, was good enough to get a second season. CBS All Access has given us Tooning Out The News and Star Trek: Lower Decks, the latter of which is struggling in the Canadian TV ratings. Hulu launched two excellent new series in Crossing Swords and Solar Opposites with a hybrid series coming this September to the Disney-owned streaming service. Netflix? Not counting anime (which has been only slightly better in 2020 whence compared to 2019), Netflix has had troubles in launching a strong animated comedy series. Unfortunately, Hoops wasn’t it, and with Big Mouth going through changes, Tuca & Bertie heading to Adult Swim, and BoJack Horseman heading off into the sunset( with no spin-off even being entertained), Netflix needs to launch a new adult animated comedy before the end of 2020 to really get back on track as a destination for the genre.

So what’s on tap for Netflix that’s new? Fortunately, the streaming service has a bunch of incoming options, but with no discernible premiere date just yet. A year ago this week Netflix had put in a full season order for Agent King, a superhero crime fighter featuring the one and only Elvis Presley. Big Mouth has a spin-off in production, but with all of the changes coming down the pike, will the show suck? Tina Fey-starrer Mulligan and Alex Hirsch’s Inside Job sound stronger but are both a long ways out. The Sean Hayes starring Q-Force should be rearing form hopefully sooner rather than later.

The lone ranger in terms of a launching adult animated comedy in 2020 for Netflix that hopefully is a sign of good things to come in a post BoJack world, The Midnight Gospel. The Duncan Trussell created series was in Emmy contention with BoJack Horseman and Big Mouth actually getting the nominations, was the lone Netflix debut that truly had some of that spirit that BoJack embarked on so many seasons ago.  However, Netflix is going to have to really pick up the pace, update it’s crumbling user-interface, and get to ordering because the TV networks are starting to become a threat again in this medium, and Netflix is going to have to start reminding people where they stand.
