Modern Magic Developing Feature Adaptation Of Nuevo Rico Among Slate Of Animation Projects

You may remember our coverage earlier in the year for Kris Mercado’s SXSW-winning animated short Nuevo Rico. The animated short starring Vickie Cruz has been featured in short film festivals around the world and has officially been announced for development of an animated feature-film inspired by the short from new studio Modern Magic, the new animation studio from RODNEY ROTHMAN AND ADAM ROSENBERG. The studio is touting 20 projects in various forms of development and includes the following:

  • An original animated feature inspired by the music of the late rapper Juice WRLD (The most streamed artist on Spotify in the United States in 2020 and #4 globally) with Jaboukie Young-White (The Daily Show, Dating & New York) on board to write. Modern Magic will produce in conjunction with Executive Producers John Janick, Steve Berman and Tony Seyler on behalf of Interscope Films and Carmella Wallace, Peter Jideonwo and Lil Bibby representing Juice WRLD’s estate.
  • Nuevo Rico, an animated feature based on the SXSW award-winning short film by Kris Mercado. Set in a psychedelic future version of Puerto Rico, a brother and sister stumble upon a secret that propels them to Reggaetón stardom, but they soon discover that their newfound fame comes at a deep price.
