Merch Murmurs: Mattel to Make “The Homer” Hot Wheel for Comic-Con

In honor of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Mattel is releasing a limited-edition, die-cast Hot Wheels version of “The Homer,” available only at the convention.

The Simpson patriarch’s one-time dream car for the “average” American, The Homer appeared in Season Two’s “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” and single-handedly bankrupted Powell Motors, the car company of Homer’s long lost sibling.

The miniature version contains all the perks of the full-size, including its signature dual bubble domes (with optional restraints and muzzles for unruly, noisy children), three horns (because, as Homer claims, “you can never find a horn when you’re mad”) which all play “La Cucaracha,” an engine loud enough to make people think “the world’s coming to an end,” giant cup holders, and stylistic features that never go out of style: shag carpeting, tailfins, and metal bowler hood ornaments.

Despite the numerous objections of Herb’s auto engineers, Herb trusted his brother’s expertise regarding what the average Joe would like.  The overly-complex, impractical design would end up costing consumers $82,000 and Herb his company.

The rights to the car may have been bought by Komatsu Motors, but your right to own a little piece of history is all-but secured, and the time draws nigh! Act now before this opportunity, like Powell Motors, is no more.
