John “ON THE SPOT”: My response to the Parthenon by way of Marshall University

I’m bored as hell, so I found this article online that was written a couple weeks ago where this(I’m assuming) student wrote an article that “Cartoons aren’t the same”. Well to make a long story short, she thinks there are no cartoons out there for kids, welp I’m here to tell her otherwise.

Below check my analysis and how I decide to whip this bitch into shape…

I was watching this TV show last week when an 11-year-old boy was kidnapped. The police were asking his mother questions and one of the questions they asked her was what her son’s hobbies were because they thought the kidnapper was taking the boy to some of his favorite places. The mother replies that her son mostly stays indoors watching cartoons and that his favorite show is South Park.

I think you should be watching different programming other then ones where kids get abducted. Yes it was a horrible thing that this kid got taken away, but if from all that coverage that was provided you only got that bit piece of info from it, then you have bigger problems than worrying about what kids watch on TV. Elizabeth Smart got kidnapped sleeping, I’m surprised you didn’t write an article about that, telling everyone how sleeping is wrong and parents should ban sleeping.

Maybe I was the only one, but I was shocked by her reply. I mean what parent let’s their child watch a cartoon with a mature rating?

An open-minded one.  One who doesn’t listen to terrible TV-MA ratings and makes sound judgments for her own family without listening to one of the most corrupted agencies in government, the FCC.

To me, South Park is more of an adult cartoon due to its language, content and mature rating. Logically, I am sure the South Park people paid to have their name mentioned in the show, but the fact is there are kids out there ages 11 and younger that watch this show and others like.

I’m 27 and have been watching South Park since I was in 7th grade. Since, then I experienced 9/11 from across the river of where I live, graduated high school, then college, and have been gainfully employed since I was 16 years old. I can assure you, there’s been a bunch more to deal with in my life then whether or not I watch South Park.

Shows like Archer, Family Guy and American Dad all have adult humor and content in them. Some networks that were once for kids have become more interested in attracting adults to watch their stations.

Which networks? Archer, Family Guy, and American Dad are all on at primetime on networks that have programming for all ages, not just kids.Hell, I think the Disney channel has worse shit on then any of them, ever see those terrible DeGrassi shows?

What happened to the good old days when cartoons were something a parent could let kids watch on Saturday morning and know they were not watching anything relating to adult sexual content or adult language?

So you are talking about two kinds of animated programming here. The shows you are complaining about are on weeknights during prime time viewership which is typically when the networks make their most money with a predominately male 18-34 audience. Saturday mornings feature programming best suited for children and there are plenty of shows to watch, you should check out TVGuide.com.

What happened to not having to review a cartoon before your child watched it on Cartoon Network because you were sure what they were watching was safe?

Cartoon Network is all children through teen rated programming so I would assume parents wouldn’t have to watch anything on there to see if its safe. You can’t false-advertise that kind of information, so typically parents are in the other room making dinner while this stuff is on and usually are intent with the fact that nothing wrong will happen to their children. Plus, most TVs have V-chips now, where parents can program what TV their children are allowed to watch.

What happened to the simple, fun, clean cartoons like Scooby Doo and Mickey Mouse?

Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated is set to premier this Spring for its 2nd season on the aforementioned Cartoon Network. The original voice of Mickey Mouse passed away about four years ago, but Disney found a replacement and can be heard on the animated series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse which currently airs during Disney’s junior block. Check your local listings.

Yes, these shows still exist, but kids don’t seem to appreciate them as much as they use to.

Because the 3D animated films that come out every other week (like Ice Age, and Shrek) make a SHIT ton of money at the box office and as such might not be as interested in 2D cartoon shows. That’s just evolution really, remember when kids played 2D versions of Mario Brothers? Not so much anymore.

The fact is today’s cartoons are being created to keep up with today’s society.

Nope, they are popular, so they are pretty much created to make a bunch of money for networks and it typically works.

Shouldn’t a child be allowed to turn on the television and watch a show that does not contain nudity, sexual content or bad language. I feel a lot of the cartoons out there today make kids grow up faster than they need to.

Yea, as mentioned they have plenty of those types of shows. But, in the age of the internet when a kid can go on Google and type in nudity, sexual content, and bad language, you are pretty much fighting a losing battle here. You might as well let the kids go and let natural selection take its place, eventually all the bad seeds will be rooted out and you’ll be left with everyone exactly the same with no personalities…that’s what you want right? Relax, sweetheart…take off your bra if you want to, no one’s watching.
