Insight: Candace Owens And Disney Agree On One Thing: Sex In Cartoons Is Scary

Causes for sex, like causes for race, are typically just as rife with plot holes as any other social cause that aims to censor content that doesn’t appeal to them. Admittedly, I was recently accosted by a TV network to change the title of a story that had been posted because they felt the title was “gross”, when really it was a PG-13 sex joke that fit the tone of the series in which we were doing the story for. In the interest of not dealing with a headache, and against my better judgment, I complied.

Earlier this week, UNILAD reported on comic artist Tyron Handy who often would depict black-face adapted characters inspired by The Simpsons, Rick and Morty, and others. His reasoning was he is black and wanted to see more black characters. Other see this as racist, much in the same way social justice warriors went after The Simpsons producers for casting white actors to voice BIPOC characters, Tyron is getting heat for what appears to be racist depictions of animation characters for which his response is  ‘If you don’t like my art make your own.’ While I agree, if I a white male post something a least bit controversial, I’m reprimanded for it. If Tyron does, he keeps his gig as a children’s book illustrator. Fair?

Earlier this week, Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch found it ironic that Disney was supporting Pride month despite the fact that the creator had to remove a “gay”scene from his critically-acclaimed series so as to not offend censors in China and Russia. Also this week, conservative commentator Candace Owens accused a teacher of being a pedophile for showing first grades videos like below in an attempt to teach kids a course on sex education.

Candace Owens is incorrect in her assessment that adult cartoons can’t be an effective tool to teach youngin’s about their bodies. In fact, schools have used cartoons featuring “the birds and the bees” for eons to teach the same things and nobody seems worse for the weary. The latter provides further proof perhaps that entertainment has no role in the shaping of young peoples’ minds which usually comes up when school shooting sprees happen or when the topic of “cuss words” on basic television is debated, or my favorite, when the Parents Television Council goes bananas over Big Mouth. That said, visual aids can be an assist to a teacher, not a replacement, when broaching these topics. It’s all about intent. As mentioned before, causes for sex positivity and race that infringe on artistic expression (as I learned) are filled with plot holes and are entirely subjective. That said, who knew that Disney, one of the biggest benefactors to Democratic Presidential candidates, and Candace Owens, a commentator who a few weeks ago was asking former President Trump if she could be considered as the former reality TV show host’s running mate in the 2024 election, had so much in common when it comes to their disagreements on how children should experience sex education.
