IGN Fan Fest: Invincible Panel and Sneak Peek

On Friday, February 26, IGN Fan Fest kicked off a year of promising virtual conventions with a sneak peek at one of the most anticipated adult animated shows soon to premiere. Invincible!

Created by Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead), Invincible follows the life of teenager Mark Grayson in his coming-of-age story of superpowers and brutal violence. The series is set to premiere the first three one-hour episodes on Amazon Prime on March 26.

The IGN Fan Fest brought Kirkman together with just a few of the stellar cast members set to appear on the show. Included on the panel were Steven Yeun (Invincible), Gillian Jacobs (Adam Eve), Zazie Beetz (Amber Bennett), Jason Mantzoukas (Rex Splode), and J.K. Simmons (Omni-Man).

Robert Kirkman makes a statement early in the panel that is sure to get some challenges. He says “this may be the greatest television cast ever”. While bold, looking at the roster and the crew assembled for IGN Fan Fest, it is hard to make an argument.

The highlight of the event is the extended sneak peek. An extension of the preview that we have previously seen featuring the titular character discovering his abilities. The extended look features the scenes leading up to what we have seen, including interactions with Omni-Man and Amber Bennett.

This sneak peek is early in the story, quite possibly the first scenes of the show. For anyone who has read the Invincible comic series, we know that the story progresses rapidly from these early points.

This is addressed in the panel when Robert Kirkman is queried about the multiple twists delivered throughout the books, and how they will be adapted to the animated series. Kirkman makes some bold promises including hitting these turning points early, and potentially out-of-order. Additionally, after prompting from Mantzoukas, Kirkman says there will be a twist every episode, “sometimes more than one”.

The big message expressed is that Invincible will hit the ground running. The one-hour episodes will deliver drama and action. And the story is going to follow the source material but takes some liberties that will keep fans on their toes.

If anything will get you excited about watching Invincible, it will be seeing the charisma between the cast members. This panel is sideswiped with some mocking of the moderator, and a humorous pissing contest over which character is the most powerful in the universe.

The long wait is almost over.  Invincible has been in development for such a long time, and now it is but one month away from being released. If you have been following along on Twitter, you will know that this series is getting more exciting by the week. Prefacing this panel was a major cast list reveal last week that included the likes of Justin Roiland and Seth Rogen.

Invincible may likely be the most exciting adult animated series to be released in an already stacked 2021. The hour-long episode runtime and gratuitous violence throughout the story may be a game-changer for the media and comic book-themed adaptations. And these panels just get us more and more excited.
