HBO Re-Teams With “The Life And Times Of Tim” Creator For New Adult Animated Series

HBO MAX has ordered a new adult animated series that sees them rejoining forces with the creator of their one-time series The Life and Times of Tim. The series called 10-Year-Old-Tom comes from creator, producer, and writer Steve Dildarian joining forces with former Adult Swim head Nick Weidenfeld.

Tom grapples with being corrupted by the grownups around him each day just by leaving his house. Bad influences seem to lurk around every corner… litigious parents, drug dealing bus drivers and band teachers who want to sleep with his mom.  If he sets up a lemonade stand, he gets sued for gross negligence. If he plays baseball, he is encouraged to “dabble with roids.” And if he visits the school nurse, he is introduced to the world of insurance fraud. The grown ups in Tom’s life all mean well, but somehow just can’t manage to lead by example.

The series will also be executive produced by Marty Adelstein (Hanna, Cowboy Bebop) and Becky Clements (Snowpiercer, Physical) of Tomorrow Studios (a partnership between Adelstein and ITV Studios). ITV Studios will handle international distribution of the series.

Update 6/18: Nick Weidenfeld has launched a new production affiliate for Tomorrow Studios called Work Friends where he will continue to develop and produce primetime adult animated television meant for streaming and broadcast networks.  [h/t: Deadline]

Our Take

While HBO MAX has stumbled out of the gate with original offerings, it’s their development slate that has us most hopeful with the likes of The Boondocks, Santa, Inc., The Princeand others all incoming. Steve and Nick are both legends in their own right. Nick is responsible for helping bring for numerous animated series to Adult Swim, some of which are still on the air today. Nick was also the producer for the Animation Domination Hi-Def lineup that brought the likes of Stone Quackers, Axe Cop, and Major Lazer.

Steve’s resume might not be as famous, but by far his influence on adult animation for internet puts him in god status. Series like Legends of Chamberlain Heights, All Dog$ Get Money, and HBO’s Animals all count Steve as direct inspiration on the production of those franchises.
