Games Review: Champions and Challengers – Adventure Time

Overview

Champions and Challengers – Adventure Time is a relatively new mobile game that features turn-based RPG battles featuring some of your favorite characters from Adventure TIme. 

Similar to other games of this ilk, you must strategize and figure out how best to mold your team into endless battle so that as the game progresses you can collect over 70 champions that includes the likes of Finn, Jake, Princess Bubblegum, BMO, and Ice King. Each champion has a unique set of attacks and abilities to help you do battle. For example, some of your characters might be better for long-range combat versus short-range or they can act as healers instead of fighters.

Gameplay involves you swiping on opposing characters until they die but also you have to be on the defense because the enemies are coming after you as well and the difficulty increases quite a bit as you traverse through the different levels. As you win battles, you can upgrade your characters to have stronger attacks and you can also get artifacts that also help you turn the tides of battle. You can earn these artifacts by just playing the game or via in-app purchases.

Our Take

Repetitive gameplay aside, if you’re a fan of RPG’s and if you’re a hardcore Adventure Time fan, you should get a kick out of this game. The battles get rather intense during play-through and if you’re fine with mining your characters to the point of lethal weapons over time you should be fine. The graphics are pretty good though, with entertaining battle animations to go along with all the sick big attacks you can pull off. The plot of the game isn’t all that enticing, but I usually skip through those regardless of the animated franchise of whatever game I’m playing. Adventure Time fans should flock to Champions and Challengers for the number of characters you can unlock while casual gamers will have fun “checking in” instead of full-on binges.
