FunimationCon 2020: “One Piece” Cast Sets Sail for Panel!

After a pretty long delay at sea, the One Piece English dub is finally coming into port with new episodes that will soon be available digitally. To celebrate this, the crew of the dub gathered together in order to answer a few questions, discuss their experiences, and look at clips from the upcoming episodes. Here are some of the highlights:

Collen Clinkenbeard (Luffy) on getting the news of finally returning to the dub after so long:

“I think the best way to describe the feeling would be the buzz around an office space by the water cooler. As soon as some people knew it was coming back, it would trickle down, we started getting materials in…and here we are.”

Brina Palencia (Chopper) on Chopper bonding with Law over pirate doctoring in the new arc:

“I have actually been looking forward to their interaction for quite awhile. I genuinely like how they don’t like each other at first and then have to build up that trust. They could not be more opposite from one another, but they both have a lot of integrity in the way they do medicine, so I think they make an excellent team because they’re so different.”

Mike McFarland (Buggy/ADR Director) on coming back to dub the show:

“I love it so much, I love the show so much, I love working on it. It’s such a fun thing for me to work with the Straw Hats. I’ve been working with them since we started working on the show in 2007 or so. It’s a fun comfortable place to be. Even when things get rough on the show, it’s a joy to record.

Anthony Bowling and Kyle Philips on the dubbing process and working with Mike:

AB: There’s been a couple moments where Kyle and I have had to run back and forth to each other because we’ll be working on different episodes, but sometimes it’ll be like “Oh, I have a character who only has one line but apparently he’s the bad guy in your arc” so we have to coordinate on casting them based on who we like working with and who’s been cast before. That’s been a little bit more broad with what we want to do with this.

KP: And it’s actually kinda pretty cool too because with multiple directors working on the same project, everyone knows all the actors but also kinda has their own kinda group or stable that they know, so Anthony will cast someone who I’ve never worked with before, so it’s a cool way to go “oh, I have to work with this person now” and they turn out to be great.
