FunimationCon 2020: “My Hero Academia” Stars Discuss Season 4

Despite only recently finishing dubbing the fourth season of their biggest current show, Funimation isn’t about to leave it out of the festivities with their first ever (and hopefully only) convention from home. Several members of the cast, including recent additions who only had small roles in the new season, were present to answer questions about their characters, the show, and everything else. Here are some of the highlights.

David Matranga (Todoroki) on how he handles his character’s relationship to Endeavor:
“When I’m working on Todoroki, I have to hold both of those spaces at the same time. The space of forgiveness, that I hope or wish things could be different, and also connect to the anger, the resentment, the bitterness, and then let those things merge and flow back and forth and find out, where is the bitterness show up? Where does it come out? Where does the love or hope happen? A lot of the scenes about the family have been intense.”

Patrick Seitz (Endeavor) on how the audience is connecting with his redemption in the season finale:
“They’re getting to see him try, they’re getting to see him fail, they’re getting to see him realize in this life or death moment, they’re seeing growth. They don’t have to like him or forgive him or be part of his fanclub, but it’s gratifying as an actor when you have those moments with a character, especially when it’s a character who they think “I HATE that guy”. He’s still him, but you get to see him in a different kind of moment.

Cast members on what They would want their own Quirk to be:

Anairis Quinones (Miriko): Future Vision. Being able to anticipate what’s going to happen
Patrick Seitz: Definitely not fire. For me it would be power to read, understand, and speak every language.
David Matranga: I try to come up with a different answer every time I’m asked this. I would like the power to take away the five senses from someone.

On what they would do if they met a character from the show and spend a day with them:

Zeno Robinson (Hawks): Mirio. We’d go to the beach and get chili cheese fries.
Anaris Quinones: Mirio. He’s so chipper and sweet.
Patrick Seitz: Froppy, Gentle, and La Brava. We would drink tea and have frog related hijinks.
David Matranga: I think I’d wanna hang out with Fat Gum and just binge eat and burn it all off.

Patrick Seitz on why Endeavor shouted “Plus Ultra” during his fight with High End:
“I feel like a lot of Endeavor’s growth is getting over himself and getting out of his own way. So I think in that moment, he realized that while he didn’t like the motto, Plus Ultra is something emblematic that people can derive strength from.”

Zeno and Anaris on their hopes for their characters in future seasons:

Anaris: I hope for more screentime. I wanna see her in battle, I wanna see her dynamics with other characters.
Zeno: I hope we see some different sides of him. The cool Hawks and when he becomes completely analytical and tactical.
