French Charlie Hebdo Documentary to be Re-released, Shown in U.S. Theaters

Kino Lorber

The U.S. rights for the French Charlie Hebdo documentary It’s Hard Being Loved By Jerks (C’est Dûr D’Etre Aimé Par Des Cons) have been acquired by distributor Kino Lorber.

Originally released in 2008 by Pyramide, there has been a renewed interest in the film since the January 7th attack on the satirical magazine’s Paris offices.

It was already re-released on January 22nd in 110 cinemas abroad, but there are now plans for it to have a theatrical debut in major U.S. cities and markets serviced by Emerging Pictures’ contemporary French film touring group, Rendez-Vous Near You, part of the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema program of the Film Society of Lincoln Center and French movie exporter UniFrance Films.

The documentary will also be promoted at high schools, universities, and libraries across the U.S. “to inspire community discussion regarding freedom of the press, religious fundamentalism and the escalating confrontation between radical Islam and the West over democratic ideals,” said Kino Lorber.

The film centers around the legal battle between Charlie Hebdo and the Muslim French Council for their role in reprinting a controversial Muhammad cartoon from Denmark back in 2005. The film contains interviews with Charlie Hebdo cartoonists like Cabu, Charb, Tignous, and Wolinski, all of whom tragically perished in the terrorist attack.
