“Final Space” Creator Promises Changes For Season Three

The ratings were up, our scores were even when comparing Final Space’s first two seasons. The Olan Rogers-created joint is dealing with some growing pains, but thanks to the sheer will power that is Olan’s army of fans, the series is expected to get a third season pick up any day now.

Olan has posted an update on Reddit where he talked about the highs and lows of show business. Everything from network notes to going over budget, Olan is learning the ins and outs as a showrunner for a popular series. Interestingly enough, the series that aired its second season on Adult Swim, was getting network notes from TBS, all in the name of increasing the popularity of Final Space. How ironic is it, that a network like TBS that has never successfully launched an animated series is somehow an expert on what should go into an original primetime animated series. Moreover, viewers would have to wonder had Adult Swim been closer to the production process, would there have been any notes at all, and instead would we have received a higher-quality show? I’m also confused by Olan’s take on “Chapters”. For instance, one of the episodes for season three are titled “Chapter 24”, but also surmises that the show’s entire first season was a first chapter, but with chapters 1-10 acting as the show’s episode titles? By the second season, the show switched to regular episode titles, but Olan notes in his check-in that season two was, in fact, chapter two. It’s very confusing, and hopefully, we can get some of that cleared up.

In any event, Olan says season three will be a bit different. He’s not promising perfection, but he is promising a more concise and simple premise that should have the show focus it’s strengths a bit more while hiding it’s weaknesses. I’m even wondering if HBO Max would be a better home for Final Space with the series finding more fan-fare when it streams on Netflix internationally than it does as a weekly episodic series on Adult Swim, therefore getting a key producer for original animation that doesn’t run off and sell a show to Netflix anyway.

Olan Rogers is a name we’re gonna hear about for years to come, that’s already a given. But, with the TV landscape going through changes will Warner Media be able to keep it’s budding sprout?
