English Dub Season Review: Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town?

Overview:

You take a super overpowered protagonist that doesn’t know how strong he is and place him in a starter town. You get laughs and some good fights and set pieces. If you want masterful storytelling or a big overarching plot don’t come here. If you want to laugh and have a great time, then welcome to a great show!

Our Take:

You know, long name aside you’re really missing out if you let this one slip you by. It takes the standard OP protagonist and puts just enough spin on it to make it fresh and exciting. Some of the jokes pertaining to how our hero Lloyd has no idea how strong he is, gets a little old. I would say the jokes land more often than not though.

With the dub, they chose some excellent voice actors who fit their roles perfectly. Erica Schroeder gets her first leading role that I can tell as Lloyd Belladonna. She does an admirable job here but without much, to base, her performance on it’s hard to tell. I think how she handled Lloyd’s cluelessness was really well done and for the most part that is all that needed to be there.

The standout was Alexis Tipton as Selen, the super obsessed fangirl. Alexis handled all the emotions that Selen goes through amazingly. Selen fits the yandere stereotype pretty well, though she isn’t quite as hardcore as other yanderes. Alexis really made the role her own and it’s clear she had a lot of fun with it.

I really wished Billy Kametz got more to do but with the character he was cast as I get it. I will let it be known that every time Allan was on-screen it was hilarious. There were some lines that were different from the sub but they ended up being funnier. This show also gave me more to hear from Elizabeth Maxwell who voices Riho. Riho was a character that really grows on you throughout the season.

I don’t mention sound too much but the sound effects in this show are something else. The fights don’t last long and are few and far between but when they do happen they sound pretty awesome. I can’t even describe the sounds but they are pretty unique and I think you will notice what I am talking about.

The characters are pretty great and fun. Characters make a story after all and without good ones the series would fail. There isn’t really much development to be had but for this type of story, they don’t really need to be nuanced or anything.  The story is comedic through and through and the characters fit the roles they need to. You’ve got the clueless one, the straight man trying to keep everyone on track. You will definitely enjoy the characters in this one.

The comedy hits ninety percent of the time and that’s pretty dang good. Even some of the reused jokes get to be funny again. I watched this show subbed when it first came out and was worried I wouldn’t find it as funny the second time. It was still hilarious and some of the changes the dub made had other parts becoming even funnier.

The big negative to this show is it falls into the typical anime trap. We have no idea if we will get a second season and to be honest I kind of doubt we will. There isn’t really any conclusion and just when things are getting really interesting it ends. There was a plotline near the end that was pretty unique and interesting too. I hope we get more of this and I think that says a lot. This can still be enjoyed if we never get another season and I can definitely recommend this show to anyone who likes their action not so serious.
